Modern technology has changed the way we do just about everything. This includes flying. In the past, you would have to be issued a physical plane ticket. Then, you would have to convert that physical plane ticket into a physical boarding pass before you got to seat on the plane. Then, you had to keep this boarding pass with you. Otherwise, you would not be able to get on that plane. Now, a lot of this is done electronically. Even though this can make things easier, people who are not used to these electronic options may be a bit confused. That is where it an electronic ticket, commonly shortens to an e-ticket, enters the picture. We are going to cover:

  • What an e-ticket is and how you can get one
  • Precautions you need to keep in mind if you have an electronic ticket with you
  • What you need to do if you lose or cannot access your electronic ticket

We have been flying for years. We have witnessed the evolution and growth of electronic tickets. We want you to be prepared the next time you set foot in an airport.

What Is an E-Ticket and How Do You Get It?

An e-ticket is an abbreviation for an electronic ticket. This is simply an electronic version of your plane ticket or boarding pass. Keep in mind that plane tickets and boarding passes are two different things. A plane ticket is evidence that you have purchased a general seat on a specific plane. A boarding pass actually provides you with a specific seat. Therefore, if you are discussing an electronic ticket, you have to specify whether you are talking about your plane ticket or your boarding pass.

In the vast majority of situations, when someone is talking about an electronic ticket, they are talking about a boarding pass. Simply put, this is an electronic version of a physical boarding pass. It should have all of the information on it that a regular boarding pass has.

Typically, an electronic boarding pass is a QR code. In addition to the QR code, it should have your first and last name, the date and time of your flight, your origin, your destination, and receipt number. Even though all of this will not fit on a single screen, you should be able to scroll up and down to see all of this information.

If you are interested in getting an electronic ticket, you simply have to request one when you check in. At the last step of the check-in process, the website should prompt you to enter your email address. Or, it may ask you to enter your phone number. Then, the airline will simply send you an electronic version of your boarding pass.

What Are Some of the Precautions You Need To Follow?

Clearly, there are a lot of conveniences that Tom was using an electronic boarding pass. On the other hand, you also need to make sure that you keep a few precautions in mind. First, you have to make sure you can actually access your electronic ticket. If you check in 24 hours in advance and pull it up on your phone, you may think everything is okay. On the other hand, the airport is a busy place. You may not be able to load your boarding pass quickly on your phone. If you cannot do that, then you may be stuck between a rock and a hard place.

You may think you can get around this by taking a screenshot of your e-ticket. If you do this, you have to make sure you take a picture of the entire QR code. If you don't have the entire QR code, it may not scan at the security gate.

Furthermore, keep in mind that your phone may die. If your phone runs out of power, you may not have a place to charge it at the airport. If your phone cannot turn on, you can't access your boarding pass. This can place you in a difficult spot.

Finally, try to keep your boarding pass on you at all times. Make sure no one else can access your phone. If someone takes your QR code, they may be able to use it to get on the plane, posing as you.

What Happens if You Cannot Access Your E-Ticket?

If you find that you cannot access your electronic ticket, you do have multiple options available to you. The best option is to simply go to the airline customer service gate at the front of the airport. If you simply explain to them that you cannot access your electronic ticket, they can simply issue you a physical boarding pass.

Keep in mind that you will have to have a lot of information on you if you would like to get a physical boarding pass printed. First, the airline is going to ask you for a copy of your ticket. Make sure you have this with you. Second, the airline is also going to have to check your photo ID. This means your driver's license or passport. Finally, the airline will probably also asked you when you are flying, where you are flying to, and when you are coming back. All of this information will be important for issuing you a physical boarding pass.

If you would like to stream on the boarding process, you may want to use an electronic ticket. It is much easier for someone to misplace a piece of paper than their phones. Furthermore, make sure that your phone does not die at the airport. Otherwise, you will not be able to access your electronic ticket. Electronic tickets are becoming more common.
